4.8.20 – Continuous Learning Plan Update

Home Our District District News 4.8.20 – Continuous Learning Plan Update

Continuous Learning Plan Update Communication 4.8.20

Dear Hopkins Public Schools Community,

As mentioned in my vidcast last week, I am providing additional information on Executive Order #2020-35 and the status of the Continuity of Learning (COL) Plan the district is required to develop to guide instruction and learning for the remainder of the school year. This week administrators and teachers are working hard on the details of the COL Plan. Requirements include the following:

  • Districts are required to create a Continuity of Learning Plan on how they will deliver instruction for the remainder of the school year. The methods are not defined, except that it can’t be face-to-face.
  • The plan must include a subplan for high school seniors and graduation. There should be a process to certify that the students have completed the requirements of the Michigan Merit Curriculum; however, districts can determine how that credit is awarded. The goal is to have final grade/credit on a transcript for graduating seniors. To be clear – SENIORS, your school year is NOT over!
  • The district’s plan should aim to support IEPs and 504 plans to the fullest extent possible considering social distancing and the Stay Home, Stay Safe, Save Lives Executive Order.
  • The plan will be submitted to the AAESA for approval by the AAESA Superintendent.
  • The SAT and PSAT will be offered in the fall for those students who missed out on taking it this spring.
  • Districts will be required to continue to offer meals to eligible students through the remainder of the school year.
  • Districts will be required to provide mental health services and continue to support ISD efforts to mobilize disaster relief childcare centers. NOTE: The high school has contracted with Pine Rest to provide additional counseling services for our students.
  • Students and families may not be penalized for an inability to participate in the Continuity of Learning Plan.
  • The third-grade reading law will not be enforced for this school year.
  • All state assessments will be suspended for this school year.

I would like to assure you that when this plan is completed, we will need your support to make it successful. Next week will be a Week of Preparation and training for our staff as we get ready to implement the plan the week of April 20. We have a great staff that will continue to do the best they can to help our students learn under these trying circumstances. My next communication to you will list specific ways that you can help your child progress academically, too.

If you did not take the quick survey sent yesterday regarding the type of communication you prefer, please do so now.

Finally, please check our website and Facebook for updates related to meals, counseling resources, health and safety, and other information related to the COVID-19 crisis.

Thank you for your support of Hopkins Public Schools.

Gary Wood
