Grades 6-12 Virtual Academy (HVA)

Who We Are

Hopkins Virtual Academy (HVA) provides tuition-free, online learning opportunities for students in grades 6-12 with Internet access at home. This school program is open to all students (who meet the enrollment criteria) and are looking for flexibility with their learning:

  • Full-time online students (5 online classes per trimester from home)
  • Part-time students (3-4 online classes per trimester from home)
    • Part-time students may participate in person in Band, Choir, Spanish, AP classes, and/or Allegan Vo-tech (11th/12th graders only)

HVA students will be assigned to a HPS building.  High school students may choose one of two academic paths in their HVA program:

HHS Diploma (Traditional Curriculum)

– Classes connected to HHS curriculum

– 27.5 credits needed for HHS Diploma

– Students may participate in HHS after-school activities

– Students can walk in the HHS graduation

– Students in grades 11-12 may attend Allegan Tech Center

– Students will receive counseling support when needed

Hopkins Online Diploma (Michigan Merit Curriculum)

– Classes connected to state-required HHS curriculum only

– 18 credits needed for Hopkins Online Diploma

– Students may choose online elective courses (their choice)

– Graduates will receive diploma upon completion of program

– Students in grades 11-12 may attend Allegan Tech Center

– Students will receive counseling support when needed

Who makes a good online student?

Virtual learning is different from being in a classroom in person. It takes a different mindset from the student and support from the family to adjust to this new type of instructional delivery. Some attributes to consider:

● Is your child a strong reader?

● Does your child have strong communication skills? .

● Does your child like to learn new things?

● Can your child create and stick to a schedule?

● Does your child have stamina for learning?

● Does your child have a Supportive Learning Guide at home to help keep them on track daily? This can be a parent, tutor, older sibling, etc.

Please remember:

To newly enroll for HVA, you must already have your child enrolled in Hopkins Public Schools and have completed all of your Final Forms documentation for the current HVA school year. You can check with your building secretary to make sure that was completed, or log into your account to make sure all forms were completed as well.

Once this has been done, please complete the following form and you will be contacted by the HVA Site Coordinator 2 weeks prior to the trimester starting to set up a new enrollment meeting with both a parent the student primarily lives with and the student. Here you will:

  • Discuss expectations, calendar and testing participation
  • Schedule classes for the year
  • Receive the student’s Chromebook
  • Get your school pictures taken (during August Orientation only, HMS students may do this on HMS Orientation night in August)

All HVA students are required to attend an Orientation meeting prior to starting each school year.  August HVA Orientation meeting times will take place during HHS Orientation. Parents will be emailed with time slots available and parents can choose (first come first serve) what works for them.
